About Vortex
A Palm Bay academy built on real coaching since 2008.

01 — Founded 2008
Built around real coaching
Tommy Wales opened Vortex in Palm Bay in 2008 after a decade of training under Master Renato Tavares. He wanted a room that ran the way he wished his first jiu-jitsu room had — technical, demanding, and honest about what works.
Today, the gym still runs on that standard. Every promotion at Vortex passes through Tommy’s hands. Every coach on staff was trained inside this room. The curriculum is the same one the upper belts are working on, scaled and supervised for each age group.
We don’t run a McDojo. No contracts of dubious length, no belt factories, no fitness-class gimmicks dressed up as martial arts. Just a real jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai academy in Brevard County, training adults and kids who want to get good.
02 — What we believe
How we train
Technique before intensity
Every white belt drills the same fundamentals the black belts are still refining. Intensity earns its place after technique is in.
Promotions are earned
Belt rank at Vortex is conferred by Tommy, on the mat, after the work shows. No timed pipelines, no pay-to-promote.
Hard training, no ego
Upper belts roll with lower belts and coach them on the way through the round. The room is competitive; the people are not.
Kids learn life skills, not stunts
Listening, focus, respect for training partners. Real bully-prevention instead of slogans. Parents see the difference at home within weeks.

The team
Coached by people who train
Tommy Wales and seven other instructors — black, brown, and purple belts; Muay Thai coaches; veterans; competitors. All trained inside this room.
